The corporate world is turning to athletes to grow their businesses. A research study from FT Longitude and The Adecco Group – the world’s largest human resources provider and temporary staffing firm in the world – assesses why.

As part of The Adecco Group’s Power of Work campaign. FT Longitude helped investigate why the global talent shortage could cost firms nearly $8.5 trillion in lost revenue by 2030. We found that companies believe that elite and professional athletes could provide a unique solution, bringing fresh thinking and a unique set of skills to these organisations.

It is these attributes, matched with athletes’ broad range of diverse experiences that make them an unbeatable source of talent in an increasingly talent-scarce world. But because of their diverse, and often atypical backgrounds, these athletes are often overlooked by companies and recruiters alike.

Among other attributes, our research found athletes to be highly analytical as well as strong creative thinkers. Their natural publicist mentality combined with a positive business mind, means they are passionate ambassadors for their brands and prove themselves to be persuasive communicators – yet there are precious few companies tapping into this potential.

The study was qualitative in nature, using insights gleaned from expert desk research and in-depth interviews, and thus allowed The Adecco Group to spark discussion and debate with their clients, and raise awareness among the athlete community as well as potential hiring bodies.
